The Little Birdie

 

 

The little birdie awakens today

She awakes with a new purpose

She knows it's time to break out

She starts pecking

Cracking the hard shell that has always protected her.
Pecking and pecking until
She finally breaks through.

Poking her beak out at first

Smelling her surroundings
Then poking her head out
finally getting to see the world around her.


At first she has such a desire to see
To see what else lies beyond her trees
Every day she spends wondering
Wondering about what lies beyond her little forest

But she knows she must wait

She must wait until she is strong enough
She must wait until she is wise enough
Oh but she knows one day she will be
And then she will wait no more

When that day arrives

The little birdie will awaken
Poking her beak out first
Smelling a smell new to her
The sweet smell of freedom

Then she will poke her head out

Looking around at her surroundings
Finally planning where to go


One by one
her wings stretch
Each flexing to lengths new to her
Showing their glorious span


She steps further and further out onto the branch
Further and Further away from the comfort
The comfort of the known


With each step her heart drums
Drumming like a primal song
A primal song that only she can hear.
It's only a faint sound
It's only a distant sound
But she can feel it in her soul

When she reaches the edge
She hesitates
Stopping herself
Questioning herself
Doubting herself

But the drumming of her heart beats

Beats louder
Beats stronger
Beats steadier
With the knowledge that today
is the day that she will finally
Finally Take flight
And soar further
Further than any dream could ever prepare her for.
